Why you need a "safe space" for public speaking

Not the college-campus culture-war kind though. A better one.

Hey Greenblasters!

Fair warning:

Today I’m gonna pitch something to you, so if you’re not in the mood for that, I totally get it, just wanna be upfront.

The thing I’m pitching (or more accurately, gauging your interest in) is:

A “safe space.”

But not the stereotypical safe space, which conservatives love to rant about and which conjures up images of blue-haired 20-year-olds. I’m talking about:

An online community, with me as the coach.

With other entrepreneurs, where you can practice your public speaking, communicate your ideas, and tell personal stories from your life, so you can get honest & supportive feedback on:

  • what you say

  • how you say it

  • how you come across when you speak

  • what your online presence is communicating

  • and what stories from your life are interesting & relevant

I’m gonna explain what that looks like below. But first:

Why call it a safe space, Will, you weirdo?

The reason I use the term “safe space”, despite its culturally loaded nature, is:

Having a place to practice your speaking and storytelling is something desperately needed in the business world, but hardly anywhere to be found. Which is:

Why my coaching business has been successful

Such as it has been:

  • 7+ years,

  •  ~$250K/year as a service-based biz,

  • multiple award nominations,

  • and a huge client list including F100 companies

The point is:

I’ve been successful because nobody fucking knows how to give people feedback on the way they communicate.

And no one knows how to improve on their own.

Managers, bosses, friends, spouses, colleagues, and even business coaches have no vocabulary to describe what’s helping and hurting you in terms of your communication.

But I do.

If you don’t know my story, I was an actor since age 7, went to theatre school, became an English teacher, then co-founded my first company in China.

Now as public speaking coach, I’ve helped over 5000 people transform the way they talk, because:

As a former actor & teacher, coach, entrepreneur PLUS a psychology & storytelling nerd, I’m able to identify:

  1. What’s holding you back

  2. How to fix it

AND I know how to create the “safe space” for you to do so.

Why do I need a safe space though?

Think about it:

The way you communicate is intertwined with a lot of deep shit:

  • your childhood

  • your upbringing

  • your identity

  • your cultural background

  • your “class”

  • your education

  • your self-image

  • whether English is your first language or not

  • and all the traumas, rejections, triumphs, insults, and validation you received throughout your life

To get feedback on that is not as simple as getting feedback on your golf swing.

It’s vitally important to me as a coach that:

You feel safe to share vulnerably, be honest, and receive honest feedback.

AND that you trust me and the others in the room.

I do this by:

  • telling my story first

  • sharing my own insecurities & self-doubts

  • and always being supportive but honest about what I’m observing in you.

That’s what a safe space for improving your speaking skills is all about for me.
