From consulting to workshops

How to bring what you teach clients 1:1 onstage

This one’s for my coaches & consultants (wut wut).

The service-based solopreneurs, if you will.

However, if you’re interested in getting paid to speak, this one is also for you.

Today, I’ll show you how to take what you do with 1:1 clients, and turn it into an exciting-sounding and lucrative workshop you can do for:

  • corporate events

  • conferences

  • associations

  • offsites

  • & retreats

If you’re just starting out, you can do these for free, or charge $500 - $1K.

If you have some experience speaking and lots of expertise, you can charge $2.5K.

And if you’ve written a book, and have lots of experience and expertise, you can charge between $5K - $10K (that’s what I charge currently.)

Above that, it’s about positioning, multiple books, social media following, and a bunch of other things we can talk about another day.

BUT, our question for today is:

How do you bring the magic of your 1:1s in a group setting?

If you’re a coach or consultant ready to think about speaking onstage, then I know you’re good at what you do.

You have beautiful, deep, and valuable sessions with your 1:1 clients, and get testimonials that make you feel like:

The trick is:

Replicating that feeling of transformation & connection in a repeatable, interactive group talk (i.e. your Signature Workshop).

Here are the 3 most important things to go from consulting to workshops:

1. Name the f*cking thing (the workshop)

This is hard. Titles are hard. Words are hard. Life is hard. Hard.

(Sorry.)

But it’s important!

A title makes it real, more likely to get your workshop accepted, and (as keynote speaker Will Bagget says) will help you win the “agenda war of the conference you’re speaking at and get bums in seats at YOUR talk.

Here’s a list of workshop titles from a recent retail / e-commerce event I spoke at:

1. Designing for Delight: Unlocking Insights to Elevate the Retail Customer Journey
2. The Data Goldmine: How Smart Brands Leverage Customer Data for Growth
3. From Inbox to Impact: Email Marketing that Converts

All of these have a pithy main title, then a subtitle that explains the who, what, and why of the workshop.

Make sure your talk title is similarly clear and intriguing (to your audience at least!).

2. Choose 1-2 main exercises MAX

The temptation is ALWAYS to throw everything you know at the audience.

This just doesn’t work. It actually makes it less valuable.

By overwhelming your audience with info, they’re less likely to remember ANYTHING you say.

So, make sure your workshop is centred around 1-2 key learnings that can be APPLIED immediately in the form of a:

  • breakout exercise

  • pair role-play

  • volunteer “hotseat” coaching

  • or writing assignment

(This follows the ESA method, one of the most valuable things I learned as an educator.)

For example, in my “Powerful Pitch” workshop, I share 1 or both of these two slides:

I teach them these frameworks, then get them either speaking or writing immediately to see them in action.

Application is the key here, which will give them real takeaways.

And finally:

3. Have a LONG Q&A

This is where you can most replicate the magic of a 1:1 coaching session.

A long Q&A (for at least 25% of your workshop, right near the end), will take your workshop from good to great.

If you’ve successfully earned their trust, they will ask you really interesting and unexpected questions.

DON’T BE SCARED OF THIS.

Me when I tell my clients to include a long Q&A at the end.

This is truly where the magic happens.

And it doesn’t matter if you don’t know an answer. It creates an opportunity to follow up with the questioner. Just say:

“I actually don’t know, but I’d love to research that for you. if you give me your email after this, I’ll follow up with you.”

I can’t recommend the Q&A enough.

Just make sure to have the FINAL 3 minutes of the workshop on your Call to Action slide, to tell them how they can follow up with you. End on your terms.

So! TL;DR:

  1. Name the thing

  2. Choose 1-2 main points + exercises MAX

  3. And do a long Q&A near the end
